FOHS
The Friends of Hackthorn School (FOHS) is a passionate and dedicated group of parents, staff, and community members who work tirelessly to provide enhanced provision for all children at Hackthorn School. Through fundraising events, social activities, and volunteering, FOHS raises essential funds that directly benefit our students, helping to add to their cultural capital and supporting a wide range of opportunities that enrich their learning experience.
At the heart of everything they do, the Friends of Hackthorn School ensure that our children are placed at the centre of every initiative, striving to create a vibrant, inclusive, and engaging environment where every child can flourish.
Over the past few months, FOHS has made a lasting impact by funding a variety of exciting and valuable opportunities, experiences and resources for our students. This includes an all-expenses-paid trip to the New Theatre Royal pantomime in Lincoln, a contribution to the transport for the Y5/6 residential trip to Willersley Castle, and the purchase of an incubator and eggs, which hatched six adorable chicks that were enjoyed by the whole school via a live feed. In addition, FOHS has provided new playground toys for all students to enjoy, as well as new classroom resources to support learning across the school. FOHS has also continued its commitment to KS1 provision, ensuring that our youngest learners have the resources they need to thrive.
Recognising the importance of student input, FOHS worked closely with the School Council to ensure that a portion of funds was spent on wet play games—giving the children a sense of ownership over how the money is used.
FOHS is also known for providing refreshments at many school events, ensuring that every occasion is enjoyable and welcoming for everyone. Most recently, they provided drinks and snacks after our Easter Church Service, helping to create a warm and community-focused atmosphere. Additionally, FOHS raised funds by promoting an Easter Bake Off, which was judged by a member of our church community—another wonderful way to bring our school and church together in celebration.
Throughout the year, FOHS organises a variety of fun and exciting events that bring the school community together. These include the popular Winter Fair and Santa’s Grotto, the lively Valentine’s Disco with Karaoke, and a cosy Christmas Movie Night. In the autumn, we love to celebrate with our Autumn Disco, featuring traditional games like apple bobbing. Coming up soon is the much-anticipated Treasure Hunt around the surrounding villages, which is back by popular demand and always proves to be a crowd favourite!
Whether through purchasing new resources, supporting extracurricular activities, or organising community events, FOHS plays a key role in making Hackthorn School a special place for all. We encourage all parents and carers to join us in this rewarding journey, helping to shape a brighter future for our children and build a strong sense of community at our school.
Summer Tidy-up
Here are some before and after photos showing the huge impact the Friends had on the school when they gave up a day in the summer to do a spot of cleaning, tidying and general maintenance.
We are a small group of parents and teaching staff who are committed to raising extra funds for the school. We meet once every couple of months for approximately an hour to discuss and plan extra curricular events.
Our events range from winter fayres, bingo nights, film nights, bake offs, to coffee mornings and raffles. We also have methods of supporting FOHS online too, by means of registering your Co-op dividend card for the Community Champions Scheme and by online shopping through the ‘The Giving Machine’ page.
Some events are within the school day and some after school and are always aimed at being inclusive to all, following the school ethos of being a small family friendly school.
Our funds are used to aid the school with pantomime trips at Christmas, sports day refreshments, Year 6 leavers gifts, educational material for use within school and much more.
Being part of FOHS is very rewarding – not only is it a chance to meet other parents and make friends, but it is also a great opportunity to help the school with fundraising.
We always stress that no matter how much or how little time you have to give, everybody is welcome. If parents are unable to attend meetings, help is always required at events/on the day.
