Art
At Hackthorn, we believe that all children are artists, and our art curriculum is designed to help them explore, create, and express themselves with confidence and joy.
From Early Years through to Year 6, our pupils enjoy a wide range of hands-on art experiences. They explore colour, shape, line, texture, and form using a variety of materials and techniques—including drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, and printing. As they grow, children build on their skills and begin to talk about their ideas, reflect on their work, and appreciate the art of others.
We introduce children to a diverse mix of artists, styles, and cultural traditions, helping them to see art as a way of understanding the world around them. Our lessons often link with wider topics across the curriculum, giving pupils the chance to make meaningful connections and deepen their learning in creative ways.
We also use art as a way to express our Christian School values. Children are encouraged to reflect on themes such as kindness, nurture, happiness, and community, and to communicate these through their artwork. Beautiful examples of this can be seen displayed around our school—and even throughout the playground—where children’s creative interpretations of these values are shared and celebrated.
In addition to our classroom art lessons, we offer weekly arts and crafts activities as part of our after-school clubs. These sessions give children even more opportunities to explore their creativity, try new materials, and enjoy making art in a fun, relaxed setting. Much of the artwork created both in class and during clubs is proudly displayed throughout the school, highlighting our pupils' talents and inspiring others.
Art is a joyful, imaginative, and inclusive part of school life—and we are proud of the creativity, thoughtfulness, and expression our pupils show every day.
